Who’s seen Sex and the City and felt a little jealous when Carrie’s
new wardrobe was revealed? Well during the construction of our home my husband
claimed the living area his. He wanted the privilege of designing it how he
liked. It was only fair that I chose a room too. So, much to his surprise,
instead of the kitchen I chose the wardrobe. If I couldn’t have the shoes sitting
in Carrie’s wardrobe, I was going to at least make it look like I could.
Throughout the design process I came to realise that it’s the simple things
that can differentiate between having a standard wardrobe to a glamorous
one. Here are 5 simple steps to
achieving your dream wardrobe (and this time, I’m not talking about the items
filling it):
De-clutter
You have no idea how cleansed you
will feel once you get rid of all the outdated, tired and ill-fitting pieces in
your wardrobe. Keep in mind that quality is key, not quantity.
Make it all about owning a good quality capsule wardrobe that you love and fill
it with pieces you can mix and match.
Build yourself some shelving for your shoes.
Then place them on the shelf with one facing the front and one facing the back.
You will save space; enough space for another pair of shoes!!
Choose your hangers
Do yourself a favour and match all your hangers.
It doesn’t have to be the wooden types (although they do look amazing). Opt for
all black or all white. It really doesn’t matter, just ensure they are the
same.
Layout
Now here’s a tip I learned during my time working
in a fashion agency. Space all your hangers’ one finger width apart. This
tidies up the overall look. Ta-da!
Lighting
If it’s a walk-in-robe install a cute pendant
light in the centre. A statement piece that hits you in the eye when you open
the door makes your walk-in-robe feel more like a “dressing room” and less like
a storage unit. ...and change the globes when they blow!
Now, don’t waste any more time. Go give yourself the
wardrobe you deserve!
