Staple #4 - The White T-Shirt

The white t-shirt - you’re thinking booooooring right? What is so special about a white t-shirt and why do fashion stylists go on and on about it being a “staple”? I’m here to tell you that there are several reasons why a white t-shirt is quite the opposite of boring and why a good quality version should be hanging in every wardrobe. In fact, let me just show you. Here are several different ways a white t-shirt can work for you.

What do you think of the white t-shirt now?

Unlike my previous blog posts from the Staple series, instead of pinpointing certain styles to suit specific body shapes, I’m going to approach my insider tips a little more casually. Reason being, when it comes to the white t-shirt, it all depends on the look you’re going for.  It is that versatile!

Tip #1
If you have a large bust or carry most of your weight on your upper torso, opt for a v-neck. A “V” elongates your upper torso. If you’re reading this and thinking “damn, I already have a white t-shirt which I love but it’s not a “V”, that’s ok. Put a fine pendant necklace on and that will help counteract the round neck <sigh of relief>.

Tip #2
If the widest part of your body sits around your hips, opt for a round neck. This does the opposite to the “V”. It will broaden your shoulders and balance out your proportions. Also, try to find one that doesn’t finish at your widest point. A fraction longer or shorter will work wonders.

Tip #3
If you have an hourglass shape, a form fitting t-shirt will show off your feminine curves. This doesn’t mean you can’t opt for a loose fit style though. It comes down to the look you want to achieve. Alternatively, if you're feeling a little daring, tie a knot at the front or at the back. This look screams sexy!

Tip #4
If you are shaped like me (straight up and down), you can always choose a longer length and cinch the T in with a belt or simply wear an outer layer which provides some shape.

Tip #5
Plain white t-shirts come in an array of price points. Whatever your budget, try to get one that is going to wash well and stand the test of time because you will never stop needing it.

Tip #6
If you have a fair complexion, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t wear white. Yes you can! Just wear a bit of colour on your lip, or a coloured accessory around your neck and VOILA - pasty white issue resolved.

Tip #7
White always looks best with denim!

Hope you found this helpful.
